What is Steel Rope?
Steel ropes consist of steel wire core and steel core. These parts are brought together in order to work together, and parts with a diameter suitable for the load and working type of the rope are used. It is important that predetermined designs are used according to the correct selection area.
Steel Rope Types
Steel ropes have their own unique wire diameters, fineness, thickness, flexibility and alloys; This is the factor that ensures the diversification of the ropes. Types of steel ropes are as follows.

Wire Rope Surface
Steel ropes are produced from black steel wire. In order to prevent the steel ropes from being exposed to corrosion in the area where they are used, and to extend their useful life, the surfaces of the steel wires can be galvanized. On request, the ropes can also be covered with flexible PVC material.
Steel Rope Strength Calculation
The carrying capacity of steel ropes is calculated according to the preferred wire number and mm2 nominal strength during production. Rated strengths are as follows.
1770 N/mm2 = 180 kgf/mm2
2160 N/mm2 = 220 kgf/mm2
1960 N/mm2 = 200 kgf/mm2
Wire Rope Winding Direction
The winding direction of the steel ropes means that the rope rotates during manufacturing. There are two different types of rope winding.
Cross Rope Winding: It is the opposite direction of the winding direction of the wire rope and the winding direction of the steel wires.
Straight Rope Winding: The winding direction of the steel rope and the winding directions of the steel wires are in the same direction.
Wire Rope Extract
Two different wire rope cores are used in steel rope manufacturing. There are basically two different reasons for the different use of wire rope cores; the first is to add flexibility to the steel ropes and the second is to increase the carrying capacity. Two different wire rope cores are listed below.
Hemp cored steel rope: It is produced with inert fiber and polypropylene fiber.
Steel core wire rope: Wire rope is produced with core and steel core core.
Steel Rope Cutting
There are several different methods for cutting steel rope. These are hand shears used for up to 8 mm diameter. Hydraulic cutters are used for diameters thicker than 8mm. In addition, the most common method, which is easily used in all rope diameters, is the cutting method with a sripral (Stone Engine). Gas metal arc welding machines can also be used for cutting scrap ropes, but this method is not recommended for new and oily ropes.
Steel Rope Oil Usage
It is lubricated with asphalt-based oils to prevent wear, corrosion, rust and rot during the application, manufacture and stacking of steel ropes.
Using Different Wire Rope
In the event that the steel rope you have used needs to be changed, if for any reason a steel rope with different qualities arises, the diameter of the rope you need to use should be the same. Even though it is different, care should be taken to ensure that the breaking load of the steel rope you have to use is equal or higher. Ropes with different characteristics cannot be used for the same works, and if they are used, it will cause risk and dysfunction.

Wire Rope Groove and Rope Relationship
The thread diameters on the pulley and winch drums and the properties of the material used are effective on the working performance and life of the rope. If the rope used is wide according to the diameters of the grooves, the rope is crushed and wire stranding occurs. In the case of using a smaller rope than the groove, ovalization and scale occur in the rope.
